Analyst: True SOA a Pipe Dream

Until recently, SOA had been treated as a technology development du jour, Wolstenholme said during his presentation titled "Financial Services—You Don't Need SOA When You Have Cobol."

"Even if something is hyped, it doesn't mean you shouldn't discuss it," Wolstenholme says.

Although the Cobol is a tested, proven, and widely used programming language, it lacks flexibility, cannot be expanded or added to and is hard to integrate with new or different code, he explains.
