As Smith Barney Shearson begins its official life as a brokerage firm, Lehman Brothers Inc. embarks on its life as a freestanding investment bank. But as much celebration as this independence has sparked at Lehman, it has also brought with it some sharp self-scrutiny. And sources both within and outside the firm say that such scrutiny has put Lehman's trading room technology group under particular pressure -- and may soon result in major changes, both in terms of staff and systems.
