As US options market continued its inexorable climb, ‘plumbing’ issues persisted

Capacity concerns have lingered in the options market, but progress was made in 2024.

While the numbers aren’t officially in for 2024 as the calendar gets ready to flip over to another new year, according to the Futures Industry Association, the total number of options traded worldwide was 108.2 billion in 2023, up 98% from the previous year. That number will be much higher once the final tally for this year is in.  

The increase has been driven by a number of factors, including a massive spike in retail trading since the pandemic thanks to sites like Robinhood, E-Trade, Charles
