Headline Sun Warms To Next -- Even Buys A Stake: So What About H-P?

Former rivals Sun Microsystems Inc. and NeXT Computer Inc. have apparently put aside their differences and agreed to collaborate on developing a version of NeXTstep that will run on RISC workstations from Sun and, eventually, from any other vendor willing to meet a so-called compatibility test. As part of the deal, Sun will invest $10 million in NeXT, giving it a 1.5 percent stake in the vendor.

In the trading room systems market, the most immediate effect of NeXT's deal with Sun is to throw
