Some day soon, fund managers and head traders will look back and say, "This was the year that FIX joined the mainstream." In 1997, the FIX, or Financial Information Exchange Protocol, came close. More firms on both the buy and sell sides agreed to comply with the protocol for exchanging trade information, and more vendors agreed to develop software for it, but the actual volume of messages that could be termed "FIX compliant" is still far short of the industry's goals.
