MERRILL PLANS COMMON DATABASE

Merrill Lynch has ruled out standardizing its US operations and Mercury Asset Management on one global, portfolio accounting system, says George Lieberman, a first vice president and senior director for technology strategy planning with Merrill. Instead, the company will link its various asset management businesses via shared databases and virtual private networks.

The decision was reached based upon Merrill's management view of asset management as a "manufacturing
