Merrill Lynch & Co. is in the design stages of a successor to the Prism workstation that is now used by its fleet of retail brokers. Known internally as Point-of-Sale 95 or POS 95, Merrill's next platform will move data and applications processing to local OS/2-based servers, while using for the client side a homegrown graphical user interface running on the same 286-based hardware that is now installed on some 17,000 desks firmwide.
