How exactly do electronic dealing systems pose a threat to a country's national security? This is just one of many questions raised by the recent measures announced by China's official news agency.

The agency, New China or Xinhua, made front page headlines around the world when it announced on 16 Jan. that it plans to begin "supervising" foreign financial information providers' business in China.

Under new powers granted it by China's State Council, Xinhua will force financial information vendors
