Analysis: NYSE Hybrid to Face Obstacles

NEW YORK—Despite John Thain’s Aug. 2 call for an expanded Direct+ order execution platform, his enthusiasm for a "hybrid" system could be doused.

Many industry insiders consider the NYSE CEO’s battle for change will be a tough one—not just in terms of whether the proposal will be approved, but also in terms of IT deployment.

Some observers question whether the Direct+ server can actually support the proposed expansion, if specialists will use electronic trading "circuit breakers" to their own
