Over the past several weeks, Bear Stearns & Co. has quietly begun to position itself to be the first trading operation on Wall Street to deploy asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) communications directly to traders' desktops via local area network. If any trading operation has a chance of following through with such an ambition, Bear is it: The firm has to date been the Street's most active ATM devotee and is one of only a few that have used it to support wide area network-based trading
