Having canceled plans to purchase NeXT Computer Inc.-based software from mc2 Technologies Inc., Mobil Oil Corp. has informed vendors -- including hardware vendors -- that its entire energy trading system project is once again up for grabs.

The decision by the Fairfax, Va.-based corporation is bad news for NeXT, which now stands to lose a high-profile trading room customer -- and a 400-unit sale -- that it had already begun to brag about. What's more, the fact that Mobil has reopened its hardware
