Three weeks ago, NeXT Computer Inc. transformed itself into a software company, halting production of its UNIX workstations, and renaming itself NeXT Inc. in the process. Industry observers acknowledged that the move was an admission of defeat by founder Steven Jobs, but conceded that it was a good business decision. How smart a decision was it for Wall Street, though, a market that has conspicuously, if modestly, embraced the NeXT platform over the past two years?
