Nasdaq Loses $49M, Moving to FIX

NEW YORK--Reeling from a record $49 million net loss, a stripped-down Nasdaq will attempt to compete directly with its ECN rivals by offering two functions some of its competitors have had for years: FIX connectivity and total anonymity.

Nasdaq saw revenue decline 26.2 percent between the second quarters of 2002 and 2003 and spent $59.8 million in "strategic review costs" associated with the closure of all but the most essential operations (TTW, June 30). It will take another $12 million to $15
