Bear Stearns & Co. has opted to buy Hewlett-Packard Co.'s new HP 9000 Series 700 Unix-based workstations for use by its Financial Analytics and Structured Transactions (FAST) group. The decision -- coming as it does in advance of the firm's selection of a new digital data distribution system to support its 425 bond traders -- suggests that H-P may be well positioned to win the right to support that system too, when it is selected.
