Fincad was still tweaking Version 1.0 of its latest product when it began talks with Aberdeen Asset Management. The $264 billion asset manager was interested in F3 Excel, Fincad’s credit valuation adjustment and risk management tool—just not interested enough to sign a contract.

Aberdeen told Fincad it didn’t know if F3 Excel would work, but its ability to model derivative deals at a granular level sounded promising. At that time, the software was anything but a finished product, and Aberdeen
