Unicode Inc., a loose affiliation of hardware and software suppliers, is developing a 16-bit universal text and character encoding standard to supersede the well-loved 8-bit ASCII standard. So far, Unicode has drafted a 25,000-plus character standard that encompasses all major languages. It includes unique codes for all alphabets, archaic writing symbols, symbols, and ideographs, as well as a unified Han character set subsuming the national standards of Japan
