Oracle Bets on Sun

It is a sweet win for Oracle, which now gains control of the Java development environment, and for Sun shareholders, who get $400 million more than what IBM had been offering, according to press reports.

The immediate losers from this deal-aside from IBM, which now has another rival that can also deliver offerings across the entire hardware and software stack-will be a good portion of the Sun Microsystems staff. Sun announced plans to eliminate 6,000 positions out of its 33,000-member staff
