New Contel Owner GTE Corp. To Spin Off IPC Subsidiary

GTE Corp., the new owner of Contel Corp., has plans to sell the company's Contel IPC subsidiary, possibly within the next few months, sources close to the company say. Contel IPC is a force in the trading systems business, having sold around 45,000 telephone turrets in the last decade.

A spokesman for GTE declines to comment. But industry sources potentially interested in the deal say GTE has retained a Wall Street firm to handle the sale. These sources say, however, that the telecommunications
