Market Data Corp.'s secretive effort to develop the local data distribution system known as MDC2000 has reached a critical impasse where funds for further development have been effectively withheld until a prospective customer -- Micrognosis Inc. and Dow Jones & Co. are possibilities -- signs up to buy it. If and when MDC2000 gets off the ground, it will give Market Data Corp. the technological and legal foundation for distributing data without the help of Telerate Systems Inc.
