CTO Jim Krause and his team already had a plan in place to merge the Chicago Mercantile Exchange's and the Chicago Board of Trade's infrastructure and systems onto one platform by the time the deal was finally done.

When the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) finally closed its merger with the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) in July after a nine-month struggle, its senior executives must have breathed a collective sigh of relief.

The coupling seemed highly likely to be completed when it was announced
