The SEC is undergoing a period of leadership change, sparked by chairman Schapiro's resignation.

Scharf, who will also be an associate director of the SEC, joined the regulator in 2009 as the assistent director of Corporate Information Security. The SEC identifies him as being a key driver for its elimination of material weaknesses in its technology infrastructure.

The move is the latest in a number of shuffles at the SEC. Earlier this week, SEC chief Mary Schapiro announced her resignation, with Elisse Walter taking over at the top. Permanent candidates, which will require Congressional approval, are already jockeying for the role.
