Institutions, Non-Pros Fuel Dramatic Jump In Nasdaq Desktops

WASHINGTON--Growth in the number of both Nasdaq Level 2 desktops and Level 1 non-professional users has mushroomed in the last few years. The number of professional users of Level 1 data, which is much larger, has grown steadily, but not nearly as dramatically.

The number of users of Level 2 data has skyrocketed 150 percent over the three years ending this past October 31 to 39,927 from 15,990. Bill Broka, head of trading market services at Nasdaq, says that Level 2 is used primarily by
