Asia Awards 2023: Best front-office platform—Charles River Development, a State Street Company
Product: Charles River Investment Management Solution
Overview
Charles River Investment Management Solution (Charles River IMS) is a cloud-based, end-to-end multi-asset front-office platform supporting the following functions: portfolio management and optimization, ex-ante risk modeling, performance measurement and attribution, and full trade lifecycle compliance. Built on an open architecture leveraging APIs and cloud services, Charles River IMS is designed to address the challenges of fragmented, legacy front-office environments; on-premises systems that are difficult to upgrade; and an inability to incorporate third-party and internal analytics, data, and applications.
“Transitioning to cloud delivery and services in Charles River IMS has enabled us to modernize our operating model and deliver the most up-to-date capabilities to our portfolio management, trading, and compliance teams. The solution supports our investment operations and frees up internal resources to focus on our business priorities, all while managing costs with predictable technology and support spend.”
Prasert Impornrugee, CTO, Krungsri Asset Management
The solution
To solve the need for interoperability and extensibility, Charles River IMS has been re-architected as a cloud-native platform running on Microsoft Azure. This enables quicker upgrades, the ability to integrate internal and third-party applications, analytics and data, and the deployment of microservices that address the demands of each client’s investment process and asset class mix. Charles River’s open architecture and interoperability with a growing partner ecosystem differentiate the platform from “closed,” proprietary offerings.
“We are honored to receive this prestigious award, recognizing the rapidly growing adoption of Charles River IMS by a global client base, including investment firms, asset owners and wealth managers. With an annual research and development budget of $80 million, we are constantly investing in our technology, people, and partnerships to ensure we provide clients with the latest innovations and capabilities to better manage their investments.”
Spiros Giannaros CEO and president, Charles River Development
Why they won
Charles River is no stranger to the winners’ circles of various awards programs run by WatersTechnology and its win this year in this perennially competitive category of the Asia Awards should come as no surprise to buy-side practitioners. Boston-based Charles River, now part of the State Street stable, is more than just another OMS—it has evolved to become an all-singing, all-dancing front-office platform offering order management, execution management and compliance functionality for large numbers of investment managers, especially in its North America stronghold, although the fact that it has emerged top in these awards is testament to its global appeal.
