IMD & IRD Awards 2022: Best alternative data provider—FactSet
OVERVIEW
With a single, ever-expanding suite of datasets, data feeds and APIs, FactSet is an industry leader in acquiring, integrating, and managing data. More than half of the organization is dedicated to data integrity and concordance, integrating content sourced by FactSet and over 1,000 third-party providers throughout its solutions.
“The European Commission is committed to evidence-based policy discussion and design. The data we are acquiring from FactSet will help us better understand how supply chains are connected across Europe and the single market.”
Josefina Monteagudo, deputy head of the economic analysis unit at the directorate-general for internal market, industry, entrepreneurship and SMEs, European Commission
THE SOLUTION
FactSet’s suite of alternative datasets includes:
- FactSet Revere Business Industry Classification System (RBICS) with Tradenames, which maps over 170,000 products, services, and brands (tradenames) to the sectors of the RBICS taxonomy
- Shipping data, helping users better understand complex global supply chains of over 200,000 companies with a normalized view of more than 30 million shipments
- Sanctions data, underpinned by the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctions lists and other restricted lists maintained by global authorities
- Geographic Revenue Exposure data, allowing users to quickly understand a company’s revenue exposure in countries impacted by geopolitical, macroeconomic, and market risk
- Supply Chain Relationships, which exposes business interconnections by providing access to the complex networks of companies’ key customers, suppliers, competitors and strategic partners
- FactSet Truvalue ESG insights
FactSet’s open technology allows clients to consume data in a variety of ways, including via data feeds, configurable mobile and desktop platforms, APIs and cloud providers. FactSet Data Exploration enables clients to evaluate datasets and build investment applications. The Open:FactSet Marketplace, an online ecosystem, now features more than 145 core and alternative data feeds with the firm adding, on average, two to four new provider feeds each month.
WHAT’S TO COME
FactSet has focused its innovations and strategic investments on expanding its breadth of content—collected and integrated from third parties—to provide support for its clients’ most sophisticated investment strategies. This includes enhanced data in alternative and private markets, industry-specific deep-sector metrics, and real-time ESG intelligence.
WHY THEY WON
FactSet’s second data win in this year’s IMD and IRD awards comes in the alternative data category, after it emerged top in the best ESG data provider category. The firm’s alt data strategy is based on a suite of datasets comprising FactSet RBICS, shipping data, sanctions data, supply chain relationship data, geographic revenue exposure data and its Truvalue ESG insights, providing the buy side with a veritable smorgasbord of data to drive their various portfolio management functions, underpinned by one of the industry’s most trusted names.
“The ever-increasing desire for alternative data within data models alongside more traditional content means more time-consuming work must be carried out before the value of the data can be exposed. Firms run the risk of spending money and resources on evaluating content that may later be deemed as having little value. At FactSet, we leverage our data expertise to clean alternative and unstructured content and connect it to core financial data and provide a risk-free environment for clients to test the data, giving them more time to focus on what matters.”
Jonathan Reeve, head of content and technology solutions, FactSet
