There's no shortage of reasons for the causes of this crisis. The risk solutions were often dedicated to individual investment instruments and were siloed from one another and couldn't give a true picture of the overall risk exposure inside a firm. Risk warnings were often ignored over the last decade as banks regained their footing after the dot-com bust and then the 9/11 attacks, neither of which ground the financial world to a halt. Also, the go-go US housing market turned out to be a mirage
