Our five-year-old will take our hands and thrust them toward the cookie jar to avoid saying, "I'd like a cookie, please." His wiring is clearly different from our other two children, Nora and Tim. But in spite of a limited vocabulary, he is always thinking. Indeed, my son has taught me to appreciate the different ways people think.
