As the economy tightened last year, the words "return on investment" were both a comfort and a threat to many technology vendors.

That’s because some firms began insisting that vendors demonstrate how new technology projects could deliver ROI before agreeing to commit funds. It was a comfort in that it signaled that firms hadn’t shut the door to new technology spending entirely. It was a threat to those vendors for whom demonstrating a clear-cut ROI was more challenging.
