In 1980, consultancy McKinsey & Company, employed by telecommunications giant AT&T, projected that there would be just 900,000 cell phone subscribers in the US by the year 2000, and that the technology was not worth pursuing. At the time, it sounded plausible. It turns out that McKinsey’s prediction was less than 1 percent of the actual figure of 109 million users—they were 99 percent wrong.
