Haifa's reported plans would put it in direct competition with the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange.

Yona Yahav, mayor of Haifa, located some 56 miles north of the nation's financial capital, said that he has written to Israeli finance minister Yair Lapid to request permission for the exchange. It would specialize in technology stocks, much like the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE), with Yahav positioning the mooted bourse in the same purpose and sphere as Nasdaq in the US.

However Reuters, which broke the story, reported that the Israeli finance ministry has not received a formal request from Haifa as of yet.

The TASE has undergone a period of substantial transition lately, which saw CEO Ester Levanon ousted and replaced with Yossi Beinart last year.
