The ideal of firms managing their risk exposure on an intra-day or even a real-time basis is not new, but it has evolved in recent years to mean more than simply complying with basic client mandates and rudimentary pre-trade checks. Now, both buy-side and sell-side firms are looking to aggregate their risk exposure through on-demand snapshots across regions, asset classes and counterparties, in order to mitigate potential loss situations.
-- What does real-time risk management mean in terms of calculating risk measures, and is it practical or even necessary to manage risk on a real-time basis?
-- Typically what type of risks are firms looking to manage on a real-time basis, and how would these activities be to their advantage?
-- What are the challenges currently facing market participants in developing a meaningful real-time risk management framework? Are these challenges organizational, software, or hardware in nature, or does that depend on the firm involved?
