Hong Kong-based NTT Communications, Philippine telecom provider PLDT, Singapore-based mobile phone operator StarHub and Telekom Malaysia rolled out a new optical fiber route linking Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines into live production today, Aug. 20.

The 7,800-kilometer undersea cable, dubbed Asia Submarine-cable Express (ASE), transfers data at 40 gigabits per second between Singapore and Tokyo -- though the network will eventually grow to 100 Gbps and will also link to Hong Kong -- and could provide US-based high-frequency traders with low-latency connectivity to markets in the region, officials say.

The Japan-Singapore link will provide latency of 65 milliseconds -- three milliseconds faster than alternative cable routes, officials say.
