NEW YORK--With ECN volume building and volume figures taking on greater significance under the alternative trading (ATS) rules, the volume figures on the nasdaqtrader.com Website are coming under fire. According to some ECNs, those figures are being misused and in the process are misleading market participants about the strength of ECNs.

Most ECNs report all transactions, whether they were seller or buyer, market maker or broker/dealer. The main exception: Instinet. And because ECNs count volume
