As I scan the volumes of new product news that fill my e-mail system, I have come across two items of interest that range from what may be a step toward silicon-based lasers that power servers and data centers to the delivery of market data to your television.

• Intel, in association with researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), have taken what appears to be a pioneering step forward for laser-based, data pipes that would be supported by integrated silicon photonic chips
