MERRILL, CNBC INVEST IN ARCHIPELAGO ECN

Archipelago, the Chicago-based electronic communication network (ECN) has announced that CNBC has purchased a 12.4 per cent stake in the company, the news coming on the tail of the recent sale of 13.4 per cent of the ECN to Merrill Lynch on September 3. This marks CNBC's first foray into the financial services industry, while Merrill already owns similar stakes in Brut, Optimark and Primex.
