GAO: Markets Should Link Clearance, Settlement Systems

Joining the rally for greater coordination among the stock and stock derivative markets, the General Accounting Office has issued a report recommending intermarket cooperation to help solve clearance and settlement problems. The report is part of the agency's investigation of issues raised by the stock market crash of October 1987, which strained the clearance and settlement system.

The GAO recommends two measures to help overcome persistent problems:
