Merrill Lynch Signs With Global Crossing, Builds ‘Essential’ VPN

NEW YORK--Merrill Lynch has signed with Global Crossing and developed a private wireless communication network, something the bank deems essential post-September 11.

Merrill was already doing selective piloting of virtual private networks before Sept. 11, but the attacks made a VPN essential, says CTO John McKinley. Merrill lost the use of four buildings in downtown Manhattan.

The firm built the laser-based VPN in a New York data center. It will be part of the permanent infrastructure
