Hedge funds are pulling way ahead of the sell side in technology, and despite turmoil from the recent meltdown of the US sub-prime market, buy-side firms that build better systems will retain the advantage.

The buy side, and hedge funds in particular, wield increasing power in the industry thanks to ever-more sophisticated technology. As the hedge fund market has matured, IT budgets have grown and funds have steadily relinquished their dependence on prime brokers.
