Once the plaything of corporate-hating computer geeks, Linux is maturing into a more reliable and attractive operating system that is gaining attention on Wall Street.

A few years ago, Linux was the ultimate geek operating system. Based on Unix but written in open source code and able to run on desktops, it soon outstripped Windows NT and other platforms as the most interesting OS among the propeller-head set, in part because of its outlaw, no-one-owns-Linux
