Should we be worried about the emergence of E-Crossnet in Europe, or should we all just bury our heads in the sand?

We're not sure. The new entity, spearheaded by Barclays Global Investors and Merrill Lynch Mercury Asset Management, proposes to introduce a buyside-only crossing network. This would allow institutional investors to execute large trades among themselves, without the involvement of brokers. Benefits include lower transaction costs and, most significantly, reduced market impact.
