Rivals Sun Microsystems and Intel will be working together on a port of Sun's Solaris to Intel's highly touted Merced chip, a joint development between Intel and Hewlett-Packard. Sun and Intel have agreed to cross licence and sell Merced when it hits the streets two years from now. Sun will also port future versions of its 64-bit Unix to Merced. Sun is still shying away from a formal commitment to manufacture the new chip, although industry observers would not be surprised if it ultimately does
