So You Say You're FIX Compliant . . .

Many vendors are claiming compliance with the Financial Information Exchange, or FIX, protocol, but with multiple versions of the protocol, the claim to be "FIX compliant" is growing more muddled all the time, says Sam Johnson, co-chair of the FIX Technical Committee and a vice president at Goldman, Sachs. Nailing down a precise definition is tricky, but Johnson says claiming to be compliant for a specific version, such as FIX 4.0, implies at least the following:
