Reliable Sources

Earlier this week, I attended the Swift Operations Forum Americas where I heard Christopher Remondi, managing director, global head of technology at Brown Brothers Harriman, remark that he wished he had installed a Wikipedia app for his mobile device to keep up with the latest industry acronyms. In this case, he had been unsure what “XLDB” stood for when a new vendor repeatedly used the term during a meeting. It turns out that the vendor was referring to extra-large databases—or XLDBs.
As a journalist, I have an entire folder of bookmarks to various technology and financial glossaries and I rely quite a bit on Google’s definition capabilities. If you have not used this feature, you should try it. Just enter "define:" followed by the term and the search engine will bring up several definitions.
I wonder, then, where most technologists turn to learn about the latest technology. Is Wikipedia the first stop? Does anyone visit Webopedia.com anymore?
