Brokers Cut Execution Costs By Wiring Clients To Exchanges

Sluggish trading volume -- the New York Stock Exchange continues to lag behind last year by 3.7 percent -- is creating a glut of soft dollar trades to be made up by year end, according to Wall Street sources. But, Yankee ingenuity being what it is, some large brokerage houses actually see this as an opportunity to expand their customer base.

The brokerage houses are offering to pay off potential clients' soft dollar debts owed to other brokerage houses, transferring the debt to their own books
