Sun's Open-Source Move Questioned

SHANGHAI—Sun Microsystems will be making its Solaris brand of Unix an open source offering to bolster its fortunes against an onslaught of inexpensive Linux-Intel platforms.
Initially, observers say that this is a positive step for trading firms because it will help them keep costs down via the generally less-expensive open source options, provide better Linux-to-Unix interoperability and help users preserve their investments in proprietary Sparc-Solaris servers from Sun.
