CFTC Assumes Key Role in Iosco Leadership
On Tuesday, June 9, the International Organization of Securities Commissions (Iosco) announced the election and immediate appointment of Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chairman Heath Tarbert as Iosco Board vice chair for the term 2020 to 2022. Tarbert is the first CFTC chairman to be elected to join the leadership of the Iosco Board since the international standard-setting body was established in 1983.
Tarbert has significant experience in financial services law and in international relations. Before joining the CFTC, he was assistant secretary for international markets and then acting under-secretary for international affairs at the US Department of the Treasury. He served as the G7/G20 deputy finance minister, as a member of the Financial Stability Board and was co-chair of both the US-EU Financial Regulatory Forum and the US-UK Financial Regulatory Working Group. Prior to his service at the Treasury Department, Tarbert was head of the bank regulatory practice of Allen & Overy LLP.
Eventus Systems Appoints Sales Director for EMEA
Trade surveillance and risk management software platform Eventus Systems has announced the appointment in London of Jeff Gale as EMEA sales director, representing the newest addition to the team charged with growing and supporting the firm’s presence in the Europe, Middle East and Africa regions.
Reporting to Scott Schroeder, global head of sales, Gale is tasked with accelerating adoption of the Validus platform.
Gale co-founded Seismic Foundry in London in 2017 and simultaneously served for nearly two years as business development manager for Clear Compress, an interest rate swap portfolio compression service. From 2015 to 2016, he was a business development consultant to CurveGlobal, an interest rate derivatives exchange delivered via the London Stock Exchange, where he helped design and implement the platform underlying the marketplace. Previously, Gale spent 18 years at ICAP PLC (now TP ICAP).
RoZetta Taps Ex-Vendor Execs for Advisory Board
Sydney, Australia-based big data platform provider RoZetta Technology has set up an advisory board comprised of senior former Thomson Reuters, FactSet and SunGard data executives, to advise the company on strategy, growth and product innovation.
The vendor has appointed Mike Powell and Rich Newman as advisory board members, joining Dale Richards, who already served as an advisor to the company and now chairs the advisory board. Toronto-based Richards is founder of strategic data advisory firm Island 20 Ventures, and has previously served as president and CEO of Fame Information Services, chief data officer at SunGard, and president of North America at First Derivatives, as well as serving as a board member for numerous data startups.
Powell is currently CEO of London-based FIX software vendor Rapid Addition, prior to which he ran his own fintech and data advisory firm, Inkblue, and was chief revenue officer at Simudyne, prior to which he spent more than 20 years at Reuters and Thomson Reuters (now Refinitiv) in various roles, including global managing director of its Enterprise business, and global head of enterprise information. Before that, Powell was an account manager at Bloomberg.
Newman was most recently global head of content and technology solutions at FactSet, based in Boston. During almost 20 years at the vendor, Newman also served as director of quantitative investment management, and director of Vision Integrated Solutions.
RJ O’Brien Hires Veteran Brokerage Team in London
London-based R.J. O’Brien (RJO) Limited has brought on a veteran team of brokers to establish a new specialty in soft commodities. Gary Papier, James Hunt and David Cutler have extensive experience in futures and commodities, particularly in coffee, sugar, cocoa and cotton.
The team reports to Renée Laird, RJO senior managing director and global head of commercial agriculture and OTC markets. Papier and Hunt are both senior vice presidents and soft commodities co-heads. Cutler is vice president of soft commodities.
Papier has more than 25 years of trading, brokerage and technical analysis experience in soft commodities, particularly in sugar and coffee. Most recently he was co-head of the softs and agricultural commodities desk at BGC Partners LLP. Hunt has more than two decades of experience in London as a senior broker within the commodities, foreign exchange and fixed income markets. Most recently, Hunt was co-head of the softs and agriculturals desk at BGC since 2013, managing a team of brokers in London and Chicago.
Cutler has been active in the soft commodities markets for nearly six years, with a strong interest in macro-economics. Most recently, he was a softs and agricultural derivatives broker at Sucden Financial.
Nick Johnston Joins Outset Global as a Managing Director
Outsourced trading solution Outset Global has announced that Nick Johnston has joined the firm as a managing director in their London office to further develop the firm’s global offering and to help with its growth strategy.
Johnston has held a number of leadership roles across the industry. Prior to joining Outset, he was head of European sales trading at Virtu Financial/ITG. Prior to his tenure there, he was head of European sales trading at Barclays and held several senior roles in the world of equity execution before that.
