He is less comfortable signing multiyear deals because he wants the ability to swap pieces out as they're updated. The general guideline he follows is a two-year shelf life for user interface (UI), five to seven years for the middle-tier, and 15-20 years for data. Shah still wants to lock in data contracts at a predictable price, while other parts he'd like to replace more often, but the expense is prohibitive enough that he keeps signing multiyear ELAs anyway.
