Toffey founded Tradeweb Markets in 1997 with four participating investment banks, and was chief there until 2008, guiding development of several successful online trading venues.

Benchmark, meanwhile, began as a promising venture focused on real-time pricing changes for corporate bonds and credit default swaps (CDS), but was forced to shutter when funding ran short after about 18 months.

"Jim will provide critical leadership to our eCommerce team at this crucial time when we are launching our regulated trading platforms in the US and Europe," Colin Heffron, GFI's CEO, says. Those will include execution for both newly-cleared swaps and swaps futures. Toffey is a graduate of the Tuck School of Business at Darmouth College.
