When Wunderlich Securities director of information technology Brian Varkonda joined the Memphis-headquartered institutional and retail brokerage last July, he discovered that instant messaging (IM) in the 200-employee firm was completely out of control. "It was a totally unmanaged monster," says Varkonda. "Nobody had been paying attention to it and if there was an IM client available, we probably had somebody using it."
