Sell-side research departments have faced major challenges in recent years. In the collapse of the high-tech bubble, leading firms were hit by the massive costs, both direct and indirect, of the Spitzer settlement. Although the settlement named after New York Attorney General Elliot Spitzer and its long-term consequences have generated significant press coverage, it is by no means the largest issue affecting the sell-side research business.
