Post 9/11 Merrill Adds VPN, Global Crossing

Merrill Lynch has signed with Global Crossing and developed a laser-based wireless private network largely as a contingency plan to supplement existing contracts with communications vendors.

Although Merrill was already testing virtual private networks before Sept.11, the attacks made VPNs essential, says Merrill’s CTO John McKinley. The firm built the laser-based VPN in a New York data center, where it’ll be part of the permanent infrastructure
